How Wetsuits Work

The thicker the neoprene, the more gas bubbles it contains, and the more insulation it provides.
However, thicker neoprene is also stiffer and more buoyant. A 7mm wetsuit provides excellent warmth but requires more weight to achieve neutral buoyancy and limits your range of motion compared to a 3mm suit. Cold water diving in this range demands proper exposure protection, as hypothermia becomes a real risk with inadequate insulation.
Below 50 degrees, a drysuit is recommended. Drysuits seal completely and use air or specialized undergarments for insulation rather than trapped water. They are an entirely different system with their own training requirements.
Fit Matters More Than Thickness
A poorly fitting wetsuit of any thickness will not keep you warm. Gaps around the neck, wrists, ankles, and torso allow cold water to flush through the suit, replacing the warm water layer with fresh cold water. This constant flushing effect, called water exchange, negates much of the suit s insulating ability.
A properly fitting wetsuit should be snug across the entire body with no sagging, bunching, or air pockets. It should be tight enough that you can just barely pinch the neoprene away from your skin. Suit Style Considerations
Full suits cover your body from wrists to ankles and provide the most complete thermal protection. Shorties cover the torso and upper thighs but leave the arms and lower legs exposed, which works well in warm water where full coverage is unnecessary.
Two-piece suits, with a farmer john bottom and a jacket top, allow you to customize coverage. You can wear just the bottom in warm conditions and add the jacket when the water is cooler. The overlapping neoprene at the torso provides extra insulation in the core area.
Personal Factors
Body composition affects thermal comfort significantly. Lean individuals with less body fat tend to get cold faster and may need a thicker suit than the standard recommendation. Women often run colder than men in the same water temperature. Your fitness level, hydration, and whether you have eaten recently also affect how quickly you chill.
