Understanding tides is one of the most important skills a saltwater angler can develop. Tides move baitfish, concentrate predators, expose structure, and create current that triggers feeding activity. Anglers who can read tidal charts and predict how water movement affects their fishing spots consistently outperform those who show up without a plan. The basics are straightforward, and once you learn to connect tidal data to on-the-water conditions, your catch rate will improve significantly.

Tidal Basics

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun. Most coastal areas experience two high tides and two low tides per day, roughly 6 hours apart. The transition from low to high is called a flood or incoming tide, and the transition from high to low is called an ebb or outgoing tide. The period when the tide is neither rising nor falling is called slack tide.

The height and timing of tides vary based on the moon phase, geographic location, and local topography. Spring tides, which occur around new and full moons, produce the highest highs and lowest lows. Neap tides, which occur around quarter moons, produce more moderate tidal ranges. These variations matter because they affect water depth, current speed, and fish behavior.

Reading a Tidal Chart

Tidal charts, also called tide tables, show predicted water levels over a 24-hour period. The vertical axis represents water height, usually in feet above a reference datum like mean lower low water. The horizontal axis represents time. The curve shows how water level changes throughout the day, with peaks at high tide and valleys at low tide.

The slope of the curve between high and low indicates current speed. A steep slope means water is moving quickly, which translates to stronger current. A gentle slope means the water is moving slowly. The steepest part of the curve, roughly midway between high and low, is when current is strongest. This is often the best time to fish, as moving water pushes baitfish past ambush points where predators wait.

How Tides Affect Fish Behavior

Fish are opportunistic feeders, and moving water brings food to them. During incoming tides, baitfish and crustaceans are pushed onto flats, into estuaries, and over structure where game fish can ambush them. Many species feed actively during the flood tide, especially in the last two hours before high. During outgoing tides, water drains from flats and marshes, funneling bait through channels, creek mouths, and cuts where predators stack up to intercept the flow.

Slack tide is generally the slowest period for fishing. Without current, baitfish scatter and predators have less incentive to feed aggressively. However, some species, particularly bottom feeders like flounder, remain active during slack periods. The brief transition between slack and the beginning of a new tidal movement can also produce a burst of feeding activity.

Matching Tides to Fishing Spots

Different spots fish best on different tides. Shallow flats require incoming water to hold fish, and they may be unfishable at low tide. Deep channels and jetties often produce better on outgoing tides as bait funnels through them. Points and sandbars create current breaks where fish hold during strong tidal flow.

Keep a log of your fishing trips that includes tide stage, moon phase, water height, and what you caught. Over time, patterns emerge that are specific to your local waters. A spot that produces consistently on the last hour of the incoming tide is information worth recording and revisiting.

Using Tide Apps and Resources

Free tide data is available from NOAA for every station in the United States. Fishing-specific apps like Fishbrain, Tides Near Me, and the NOAA Tides app present this data in user-friendly formats with charts, predictions, and alerts. Many apps also include solunar tables, which overlay tidal data with predicted feeding periods based on moon position.

Check tides the evening before every fishing trip and plan your timing accordingly. Arrive at your spot at least 30 minutes before the tidal window you want to fish. Being in position when the current starts moving is far more productive than arriving after the best window has passed.
